A purely absorbent litter — like clay or silica — addresses moisture but does nothing about bacterial activity. A purely biological litter might neutralise some odour but clump poorly or dry out too quickly. No single ingredient can do everything well. That's why we built a system.

Layer One: The Biologically Active Top Layer

Layer Two: The Mineral Base
Beneath the biologic layer sits the mineral base. This is where moisture goes after passing through the top layer, and where ammonia is captured before it can escape into the air.
The mineral base contains zeolite, scoria, coir, and worm castings. Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral with a porous, honeycomb-like structure that adsorbs ammonia molecules at an ionic level — binding them and preventing them from volatilising into the air. Unlike clay, which simply absorbs liquid and allows ammonia to build up inside clumps, zeolite captures the ammonia itself.
Scoria keeps the layer aerated, preventing compaction and maintaining the airflow that stops anaerobic bacteria from establishing themselves. Coir retains moisture at the right level. Worm castings provide a secondary biological filter for any bacteria that make it through the top layer.
How the Layers Work Together
The real power of the system is in the interaction between the layers. The mineral base maintains low-ammonia conditions that keep the biological layer active and effective. The biological layer reduces the bacterial load that would otherwise saturate the mineral base. They're interdependent — and that interdependence is what makes the system more effective than either ingredient alone.

Because the system is actively processing waste rather than just absorbing it, it lasts significantly longer than conventional litter.
